I had a very similar problem, have my system set so that you can view hidden system files, and had total used disk space (when you select properties for the C drive) as larger than the total of all the files and folders.Ĭlearing system restore (on Windows XP, when looking at your disk properties, click the "Disk cleanup" button, then flick to the "More Options" tab) worked for me. Windows' System restore files don't seem to be either hidden files, or even system files. it may well be able to fix some of your problems by doing this it will tell u if there is any bad sectors on the drive. click Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragment. the drive might have bad sectors that cannot be read or written to. Worst case senario possible u have a virus.(maybe a worm) these can take up space. it could be just that with all software or applications u have it may be useing the extra hard drive space as a type of virtual memory.(tempary storage for applications) your machine might not have alot of files and folders.

they sometimes can consume 2-3GB depending on what programs you have running. Wen installing operating systems they require alot of space upon startup. Has the drive been setup with maybe a recovery partition? How many drives does ur machine say u have ? just c: d: e: etc.
